Sometimes it feels like the popular thing to talk about how much worse things are today than in the good old days. But sometimes there are facts to back it up. When it comes to Movies and TV I think it is pretty clear that the adversary has a pretty firm grip.  Recently my family has been introduced to a great new video streaming service called VidAngel where we can finally take back control of our televisions.

Where Did That Come From?

Many times my wife and I have been sitting there on the couch watching a decent movie when BAM! Someone drops an unnecessary F-Bomb (Because really aren’t they all unnecessary). We both turn to each other and say well there is their allotted one. But more recently we have noticed that even the PG-13 movies are sneaking more than one in per movie. So I have done a little research and apparently the rules are changing.

Officially, the MPAA’s Classification and Rating Administration’s guidelines state: “A motion picture’s single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words, though only as an expletive, initially requires at least a PG-13 rating. More than one such expletive requires an R rating, as must even one of those words used in a sexual context.” But the MPAA’s guidelines then add that if two-thirds of the rating board members believe that multiple F-words are used in a legitimate “context or manner” or are “inconspicuous,” then the movie could still be rated PG-13.

Inconspicuous?

I don’t know about you but we call it the F-Bomb for a reason. And being conspicuous is no part of that.
But Hollywood isn’t happy with that either. They have even found away around that fickle MPAA and its called “streaming.” You may have seen this called Netflix Original or Amazon Original, and the list of streaming originals is growing with what seems to be no restrictions.

VidAngel To The Rescue

For $1SD-$2HD you can rent movies/TV Shows and filter out what you don’t want to see or even hear. They do not have an endless list of movies/shows but so far I have been very impressed with the selection of movies they have. They add movies often and they even get great new releases. (See attached image The Martian)

Filters

I really appreciate that they let you decide what you do not want to see and not just filter out everything controversial. It is broken down into many sub categories making it easy to decide what you would like to see or not see. You can select to block the whole category or just specific words or even very specific usage of the same word.

When selecting what you want to filter out you can even click through to get a short description of what it is you are actually filtering. Many times I have done this and it really helps to give context to whether or not I believe it is appropriate or not.

This is a very simplified description of what VidAngel is all about. The best way to figure it out is just go to their site, surf around and try a movie. Personally I am a fan, but you”ll have to try it for yourself to see if it works for you and your family. The video below is an ad from VidAngel, though I have to admit, when I first saw it I though it was a Mormon Ad.

Thank you VidAngel for allowing me to take back control of my TV.
